November 29, 2006 (Laramie, WY) -- The Shepard Symposium on Social Justice, to be held March 28-30, 2007 at the University of Wyoming, has released its call for abstracts. Proposals are due December 8, 2006. Participants will be notified of acceptance by January 19, 2007.
The theme of the 11th Annual Shepard Symposium on Social Justice – A Child’s Hope and Our Dream of Justice: Living, Working, and Creating Change in the 21st Century – emanates from the many global instances of children affected by sociopolitical turmoil and war. The Symposium encourages presentations that are related to the theme. However, they also welcome approaches that are visionary and explicitly focused on social justice. Possible formats for presentations include: poster or paper presentation, panel discussion, and workshops.
The Shepard Symposium on Social Justice, an annual event at the University of Wyoming since 1997, has evolved into a major national conference. Honoring the work of the Shepard family and the memory of their son, Mathew Shepard, a UW student and social activist, the symposium works as a living reminder of the need for information and dialogue about social justice concerns in the United States and beyond. The Symposium was the recipient of the 2006 Nicholas Michelli Award for Promoting Justice, sponsored by the National Network for Educational Renewal.
