January 6, 2006 (Laramie, WY) -- The University of Wyoming Community Enrichment Program is offering $25 scholarships this semester for 10 children under the age of 16 who need financial assistance and want to register for a class.
"This scholarship program provides children from lower-income families an avenue to participate in fun, learning adventures," says Pam Brekken, UW Community Service Education marketing coordinator.
The program has awarded 30 scholarships to children since its start. Scholarship recipients have enrolled in classes such as crafts for kids, preschool swim, junior naturalist, karate for kids, ballet, cheerleading, creative dance and Native American story hour.
"This scholarship made it possible for me to enroll my son in swim classes, even on our family's very limited income," says the parent of a recent scholarship recipient. "We just moved to Laramie, so this class has been a wonderful opportunity for us to meet other moms and babies. It's helped us to make a connection to the Laramie and UW community as well as to give my son a good start in the water."
Numerous individual donors and Laramie businesses have supported the program, including Scott McFarland and State Farm Insurance, Jon Johnson with Edward Jones, American National Bank, Community First National Bank, First Interstate Bank, GM Auto Center, Wal-Mart and The Mortgage Source.
