May 10, 2006 -- UW Community Enrichment Programs is offering an energy tour, which includes stops in eastern Wyoming and northwest Nebraska, as one of the new classes in the Summer lineup. The trip will begin in Laramie, Wyo. on June 7 at 7:00 am.
With energy costs making headlines in recent weeks, the 5-day trip has been designed to show a variety of both common and alternative energy resources in the Rocky Mountain region.
The trip will begin with a tour of the Cheyenne Botanical Gardens, where an excellent example of solar energy will be displayed. During that same day, a tour is planned to both the Ponnequin Wind Facility, located near Terry Bison Ranch, and the Laramie River Power Plant in Wheatland, Wyo.
The second day showcases a reclaimed oil refinery, now known as the Three Crowns Golf Course. Participants will be served breakfast and have the opportunity to tour the facility and see the unique systems in place. The day will finish with a trip to the Bentonite Plant in Casper and the Uranium Mine near Glenrock, Wyo.
A tour of Anadarko’s Oil Fields/Refineries, located near Midwest, Wyo., will start off the third day of activities. Participants will learn about the reclamation and remediation efforts here and the tertiary recover program using carbon dioxide. Following this outing, the day will conclude with a tour of a Gillette Coal Mine.
Day four kicks off with a tour of Accidental Oil Company, located in Newcastle, Wyo. Following this excursion, the next destination will be Chadron State University, where participants can see how wood chips are used to heat the entire university.
Finally, the last day of the energy tour will have a stop at Carhenge, where participants can see a re-creation of the ancient monument using Cadillacs. On their return to Laramie, the final stop will be at the Silo House in Kimball, Neb. This fascinating private residence was once a missile silo.
The registration deadline for this tour is May 25, 2006. For a trip itinerary and cost information, please contact Amy Gronke at (307) 766-6801 or algronke@uwyo.edu. A complete listing of enrichment classes available can be found at http://outreach.uwyo.edu/enrichment.
