Early Childhood Special Education Endorsement

About the Program
The Early Childhood Special Education Endorsement program is a graduate program for those who have attained a baccalaureate degree. Because of the diverse needs of families and young children with special needs, a variety of baccalaureate degrees may serve as the entry level requirement for admission to the certification program.

For example, you can be admitted if you hold a degree in education, child and family studies, psychology, speech-language pathology, nursing, or social work. In order to meet certification requirements students take 20 hours of coursework and an additional 2–6 hours of supervised internship. In addition, if desired, the credits may be applied toward the completion of a masters degree through the College of Education. To complete a masters degree, a core of 12 credit hours in research courses and thesis preparation would also be required.

Early Childhood Special Education certification provides professional preparation for serving families and young children with special needs from birth to five years of age. This is a pre-kindergarten certification program and does not prepare candidates to work with kindergarten and primary grade children.
