MSW – Master of Social Work

About the Program
The primary mission of the master of social work (MSW) program is to prepare qualified students for advanced generalist social work practice—especially in rural areas.

Graduates are prepared for leadership roles in service, management, and policy making positions in human service organizations such as health care, criminal justice, family service, vocational rehabilitation, adoption, child welfare, gerontology, schools, and mental health agencies. The MSW curriculum is based on generalist and advanced generalist practice models. The social worker practicing from the generalist social work model operates within the ethical guidelines prescribed by the NASW Code of Ethics and utilizes the problem-solving process to intervene at all levels of client systems.

The MSW program at the University of Wyoming is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Through class presentations, written assignments, group projects, role plays, and practicum experiences students in the MSW program develop the skills needed to make a positive impact on individuals, groups, families, organizations, institutions, and communities—particularly in rural environments.

Graduates are eligible to be licensed by the Wyoming Mental Health Licensing Board.
Outreach MSW students will spend two to four years earning master's degrees, depending on their undergraduate degrees. The MSW provides flexibility to enroll full-time or part-time for either the 58-credit-hour program (for students with non-social work bachelor's degrees) or the 34-credit-hour advanced standing program (for students with BSWs). Courses are offered in distance formats (video conferencing, audio teleconference, and online) and face-to-face formats in Laramie typically on weekends. (Note: travel to Laramie is required.)
