Family and Consumer Sciences

About the Program
The professional child development option of the family and consumer sciences bachelor’s degree program has been in existence since 2000. Place-bound students with associate’s degrees in child development or early childhood education can now complete their courses of study by earning University of Wyoming bachelor’s degrees through distance education.

The degree is available online for those students who have an existing associate of arts or associate of science degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field from an accredited institution. The coursework and field experiences are identical to those on campus.

For students who don't have a degree in a closely related field, they can still apply if they have an existing associate's degree (A.A./A.S., NOT A.A.S.) and the following courses:

  • EDEC 1020 Introduction to Early Childhood Education
  • SOC 1000 Introduction to Sociology
  • PSYC 1000 Introduction to Psychology
  • An M1
  • A W1

In moving to the competitive enrollment, the department will accept applications through January, review applications and transcripts sent from UW Admissions, then notify students in March of their acceptance for fall so that they can be appropriately advised during pre-registration in April.

The program has the strong support of Head Start programs in a six-state western region. It meets the needs of those teachers of young children who are currently employed and want to further their professional career goals.
