Creative Writing: Building Believable Science Fiction and Fantasy Stories
From the perspective of a writer, crafting science fiction and fantasy stories can be tougher at first glance than “regular” fiction. While ideas may be abundant, ideas are often not enough. Getting those ideas from the writer’s mind to the page in a story that is engaging and believable is the most important aspect of good science fiction or fantasy writing. The class focuses on aspects of craft and style in taking writers’ science fiction and fantasy ideas and putting them into action. Students will need to devote some time outside of class to actual writing and a limited amount of reading. Class sessions will include lecture, discussion, workshops and activities, and critiques of other’s work.
