NEWSLETTER - Fall 2006 - (Volume 9 Issue 3)

What's Inside

Falling into Programming

Fall of 2006! Where does the time go! We have had a busy and productive summer and have managed to bring many groups to campus while working around construction schedules. The campus entertained 4-H Leadership, Music Camp, and various athletic camps in June; July brought us the Forensic Institute, Snowy Range Dance Festival, Biennial Early Childhood; August included the Snowy Range Nonprofit Institute and the Regional Wildlife Institute. Off -campus groups (yes, we coordinate all over the state) included Wyoming Workforce Development in Casper, the Literacy Institute in Jackson, School Nutrition in Casper, Solar Wind in Jackson, Worland and Lyman, and the Conference on Aging in Lander.
This fall will continue to keep us busy with the diabetes conference in Cheyenne, Centsible Nutrition on campus, Public Health in Sheridan, the DSP Workshop in Jackson, Extension Professional Improvement, School Improvement, and so on. Yes, we look forward to the winter break!
We have also been busy with marketing activities for the fall. Our office welcomed new faculty at Washaki, spun the Wheel of Excitement for students in the union during the Weeks of Welcome, visited with new students from Wyoming Technical Institute, and assembled displays at the arena and the public library. You can keep track of our current activities and upcoming programs by visiting our news site at outreach.uwyo.edu/service/news.asp. Representatives from CSE will continue to attend Human Resources Orientation sessions to enlighten new UW employees about everything CSE has to offers. Faculty members should keep an eye out in October for a mailing listing the services we can provide to make your event a success.
Keeping fit this fall is a hot topic and we are listening to your requests. You can pick which is more important to you - time of the class, or the focus of the exercises - with some of our offerings including: Gorgeous Gams, Core Strength, Cardio Combo, Early Morning Stretching, Morning Hydrobics or Evening Hydrobics.

Here is wishing you a great fall 2006!

Dog Day Afternoon - A Howling Success

Buckets of rain didn't dampen the enthusiasm of dogs or humans at the first annual Dog Day Afternoon held Sunday, August 27, at Undine Park. Over 150 participants enjoyed the event which raised $220 for the Laramie Animal Shelter building fund. More than 50 dogs and cats were fitted with micro-chips, ensuring they will find their way home if they ever get lost.
Local vendors and groomers were on hand in addition to demonstrations on obedience, flyball and therapy dogs. A photo contest was held with the winners gracing the pages of the 2007 Dog Day Calendar. Calendars will be available for $12 in mid-October at the UW Beta House, Lincoln Printing, The Pet Spa and Hydro Hounds. All proceeds will be donated to the shelter building fund.

Plans are already underway for the 2nd Annual Dog Day Afternoon. If you would like more information on the event, please contact Barbara Barnes at 742-4565 or Pam Brekken at 766-5635.

New Conference Coordinator Named

As some of you may be aware, Jerimiah Rieman recently left the position of Conference Coordinator. We are pleased to announce that Adrienne Zeller has been hired to fill this position. Adrienne has worked for Community Service Education for four years, most recently as head registrar for all our activities. She will bring a great understanding of conference coordination to our clients as she has worked as an assistant, handled on-site registrations, supervised all bookings of participants, and has had experience in special events. In addition to Adrienne, our conference staff is rounded out with Wil Radosevich and Denise Marquiss. Please call 766-5641 if we can help you with any conference coordination needs!

Language & Culture
Our corner in Wyoming is becoming global, as is every location throughout the country. Would you like to learn another language and culture? Join us for these classes, whether you plan to use the information for a career, for a trip, or just personal enjoyment! Exploring Arab Culture and Language provides the facts about the Arab culture and language. Instructor Jasmin Faulk will take you through her world as you learn the differences in Arab cultures throughout the world. Some of the topics to be covered include: understanding culture vs. religion, Arab vs. Muslim, and Middle East vs. rest of the Arab world. German Language and Culture provides the opportunity to learn, understand, and communicate in German while exploring the culture. Learn about regions, festivals, food, music, and the people and their attitudes and customs. Delve into one of the oldest languages and cultures native to Wyoming - Northern Arapaho. Arapaho is an Algonquian language spoken by 1,000 people in Wyoming. Language is a vital expression of culture and this class promotes cultural learning through the use of traditional stories, songs, games and expressions of the Arapaho people. Instructor Wayne C'Hair is thought to be the youngest fluent Northern Arapaho speaker and he also teaches Northern Arapaho Language at UW during the fall and spring semesters.
We continue to offer a wide array of classes to meet the needs of all learners in our community. For a complete listing of classes visit outreach.uwyo.edu/enrichment or call our office at 766-6802 to request a catalog.

Your Opinions Make A Difference

Community Enrichment Programs continues to strive to connect with all members of the Laramie community. During June and July, we conducted a survey targeting older adults residing in Laramie and adjacent towns so that we could direct future programming towards this demographic. We found that the current population considers learning as an integral part of their lives. While they are seeking to increase knowledge on such subjects as history, natural sciences, computers, and culture, they were also interested in participating in fun activities. In particular, the group showed interest in travel trips with an educational focus – both regional and international; they were also interested in attending events featuring guest speakers, on-campus day institutes, and breakfast or luncheon lecture programs.
We will be working on new programming to fill this current need. If you have any interest in helping us by suggesting various activities, please contact Simon at 766-6801.
In August, we reached out to the students from Wyoming Technical Institute with presentations at the Life Skills Seminars which are offered at all three campuses. Students had the opportunity to fill out an online survey which provided feedback about our current programming and generate ideas for new courses. UW students had an opportunity to provide feedback as well during the Weeks of Welcome held in early September.
