Community Service Education
The Outreach School
NEWSLETTER - Spring 2004 - (Volume 7 Issue 1)

Innovation in Action
Community Service Education has undertaken several new projects this year. We are excited to announce that Community Enrichment Programs has started a scholarship program for children in our community who are 16 years old or younger that wish to participate in a class. The scholarship program is scheduled to begin in Summer 2004. We will be offering 10 scholarships per semester that will be awarded first-come, first-serve to families that have a financial need. Many Laramie businesses have donated funds to make this scholarship program possible.

This spring the GRE Prep Workshop will be available on compressed video at various sites around the state. The GRE Prep Workshop will again be taught by Michael Wade, Coordinator of Student Advising with Student Support Services, and will be offered in late February. For more information on locations where this class can be taken or to register for this class contact the Office of Community Enrichment Programs at 307-766-6801.

In the Fall of 2003, CSE conducted two separate needs assessment surveys. Steve Aagard of the Outreach School assisted us in developing the surveys, compiling and analyzing the results.

The first assessed nonprofit interests in the state. Surveys were sent to 456 randomly selected nonprofit organizations from Wyoming. Types of training that were identified in this sample as most important were: fundraising, financial management, board of directors training, grant writing, and how to run effective meetings.

A second survey assessed continued education needs of Wyoming businesses. 965 surveys were mailed to a randomly sampled group. Over 50% expressed a need for the following business skills: interpersonal communications, communications and customer service, marketing, leadership, and management training. Just under half of respondents identified a need for the following: financial management, personnel, supervision, computers, legal issues, and public relations.

These surveys were conducted to provide a better understanding of opinions and interest concerning nonprofit and business driven educational skill development needs. Overall interest in community service education programming was identified along with specific topic areas for current and future programming at CSE.

Have a great semester.

Animals Benefit from Kindness
The holiday season has passed and our office is pleased to announce another successful contribution to the Laramie Animal Shelter! The outpouring of kindness from the campus and Laramie communities was overwhelming.

We received over 100 pounds of food, a large pet taxi, numerous leads and collars, a large bed, bags of chewy treats, kitty litter, stuffed animals and chew toys, warm blankets, food dishes and grooming aids. All of the donations were loaded up and taken to the animal shelter where the staff was speechless at how many treasures were collected.

Your kindness has helped our disadvantaged, furry little friends have a better life until they find a new home. Keep an eye out next year for this event, as we are committed to continue helping out our friends at the Laramie Animal Shelter.

New Registration Software to be Implemented
This spring Community Service Education will be implementing its new web-based registration software, Event Manager. With this software package, we are able to offer more customized customer care and registration information. We can design our own secure registration pages within the software, allowing for personalized web pages and quick updates. Event Manager also has the capability for automatic credit card authorization and has an impressive library of standard reports with the ability to tailor any report to the client’s requests. Name badges, invoices, and confirmations are printed (or emailed) from the software and suited to the client’s needs and preferences.

Event Manager is truly bringing us up to industry speed. Our customer service and capabilities will be further supported by a system that can offer functionality and flexibility. By summer, we will have all components of Event Manager up and running. Let us know how our new software can help your next event run more smoothly and efficiently. Call Sheila at 766-5641 to discuss the opportunities Event Manager has for your conference!

Has the travel bug bitten you this long winter? We have just the cure. Take advantage of the new Introduction to Bicycle Touring class. You see them on the highways and byways: people spending their summer vacations atop a bicycle seat. Maybe you figure they’re insane, or maybe you get a tinge of jealousy and want to join them. If you’ve ever felt the urge to complete a multi-day bike tour or head out on your own, this is the course for you. From training, to gear, to comfort and enjoyment, this course will discuss it all. We’ll talk bikes and what to pack for a multi-day tour. We’ll offer training tips and invite you to join group rides this spring. Participants will have the opportunity to register for the 2004 Tour de Wyoming bicycle tour, which will be held July 18- 23. Class is Tuesday, March 23 and 30.

If you’re looking for a weekend activity that includes sightseeing and fitness activities, then the Crazy Horse Volksmarch and Black Hills Getaway, June 4 -6, is what you’ve been seeking. The trip begins with a stop at Deadwood, SD. After a night’s rest, embark on a hike to a monument in the making—Crazy Horse Monument. You will hike in the annual 10K Volksmarch to the top of the mountain. The trip will include a visit to Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore National Monument, and Devil’s Tower National Monument. All entrance costs and most meals are included.

Try something new this year and take a class from one of our many offerings including fitness, computer software, outdoor activities, dance, language, or find something just for your kids. The new catalog is out. If you haven’t received a copy, give us a call at 766-6801 and we will send one out. You can also see a complete listing of classes by visiting outreach.uwyo.edu/enrichment

“Amy was a fabulous instructor for the GRE Preparation Workshop. She was knowledgeable, helpful, and upbeat. She actually made reviewing math for the GRE fun! I feel confident that my score on the quantitative section will be considerably higher than it would have been had I not taken this class. Thanks, Amy!” ~Alison Harkin, online student
