The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

NEWSLETTER - Fall 2003 - (Volume 6 Issue 3)

Changing Colors of Autumn

I think everyone is wrong if they think that Wyoming has just two seasons; it has four – winter, getting ready for winter, getting rid of winter, and summer! After our short but glorious summer, it’s time to gear up for changes – changes with new student faces, new challenges, and new directions. While this summer was as busy as ever (approximately 8500 people came to campus to attend various conferences, institutes and camps), we still made time to focus on some other projects.

The Conferences and Institutes Committee has been meeting once a month throughout the summer and the communication between departments has helped tremendously. We will be meeting once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester. We discuss what groups have asked to use campus facilities and iron out the problems of using already overextended UW facilities. If you would like to join us, please let me know.

We recently added another coordinator that will be working exclusively on Substance Abuse events for Wyoming. At this time, they are running over 40 events a year.

By October, we will have a new registration and marketing software system installed that will allow us to offer special services currently being requested by our clients. Services that will be offered include: Newsletter Development and Distributing, Membership Registration, Budget and Financial Management, and Development of Membership cards and other promotional pieces. Our newest contract is with the Wyoming Pharmacists Association and we will be assisting with all membership administration.

Jerimiah Rieman, our Enrichment Class coordinator has become a Certified Program Planner. This is a professional certification program sponsored by the Learning Education Resources Network (LERN). We are also offering this program in Denver in September for anyone who is involved in program planning and would like to have professional recognition.

We have begun exploring a scholarship program for enrichment classes and hope to have this set up by the end of fall semester. The money collected will be set aside to be used for children who would like a chance to enroll in one of our classes but need some financial help. If you would like to donate some funds for this program, or would like to serve on the advisory board, please contact Lynn Wheat at 6-6802.

So that we can attract more groups to UW, we have developed a virtual tour of the campus and surrounding area. This web site allows potential conference clients to view the campus, the community and the region from their desktop. If you belong to an organization that might like to know more about UW as a conference site, please have them visit outreach.uwyo.edu/conferences/vrtour.

LCCC and Community Service Education have created a program called “Culture and Conversation” that combines ESL classes in a totally inclusive package for international visitors. The group-orienated program is available in the following blocks of time: 5 days, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks. Visit the following web site for more information outreach.uwyo.edu/conferences/culture.

The Laramie community supports Community Service Education so much that we wanted to give something back. We have adopted a portion of US Highway 287 to maintain. If you would like to join us on our cleanup day, please give me a call!

We are looking forward to future collaborative endeavors with you throughout the year ... If we can be of any assistance in your coordination needs, please give me a call at 6-5641. Have a great fall!

Have a great semester.

Online is Where It's At
Community Enrichment Programs is taking steps to become the center for non-credit online education and certificate programs in the state of Wyoming. We are currently partnered with five respected online vendors: Gatlin Education, Training Online, Education to Go, How To Master and Legal Studies.

The online format of these courses and certificates provides the perfect educational medium for a large and dispersed state, and as connectivity increases we are confident enrollment will continue to increase as well. Instruction is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing Wyoming citizens access to classes that are not readily available anywhere else in the state.

We offer many more options than Wyoming residents and businesses have ever had access to before. On-the-job training and retraining for safety in the workplace, human resources and OSHA standards is now available at the click of a mouse. Certificates in Graphic Design, Web Design, Bookkeeping, Medical Transcription and more are available as well.

Recently, we added skills-based testing for a number of software programs including Microsoft Access, Excel, FrontPage and Word. Tests are inexpensive ($12 a piece), take only one hour to complete and come in three levels of expertise. Skills-based testing can save your department or business time and money by weeding out candidates who do not possess the skills required for the job. An invaluable tool that will create an additional level of criteria for hiring in any organization, skills-based testing is the wave of the future.

Also available at your fingertips is a large array of life-enriching courses such as “Pleasures of Poetry”, “Individual Excellence”, and “Creating a Successful Business Plan” - just to name a few.

Please join us in expanding cost effective educational opportunities for all Wyoming citizens, from high school students to retirement age. Visit our website at outreach.uwyo.edu/conferences/onlineclasses

Mountains-Plains Philosophy   September 25-27
The Mountain-Plains Philosophy Conference is a small gathering of philosophers that meets once a year at different universities. It draws participants mainly from the Midwest and Rocky Mountain states, although one speaker this year definitely breaks that pattern – as he is from Cairo, Egypt! The annual banquet is a barbecue at the Vee-Bar Ranch and conference registrants will take a tour of the Snowy Range.

Richard Rorty, a well-known philosopher and cultural critic, is the main speaker. He is best known for his book, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature, as well as for a large number of other books and articles. His address will be at 3 p.m, in Classroom 305 and is sponsored by the UW Philosophy Department, together with the Departments of English and of American Studies. All interested persons are welcome to attend.

In addition, the conference will feature twelve submitted papers, along with comments on the paper and questions from the floor. All sessions are open to the public.

Sessions on the evening of September 25 and the morning of September 27 will be at the Laramie Holiday Inn, papers on the morning of September 26 will be in the Wind River Room of the UW Beta House, and a paper at 1:30 pm will be in Classroom 109. For further information, e-mail James Forrester at frrstr@uwyo.edu.

Fred Pryor Seminar   September 29
Is your organization carrying dead weight? Problem employees drag down morale, destroy productivity and distract their supervisors from important projects.

Every organization needs group leaders who know how to handle performance problems. But many managers—especially those who are self-taught—don’t know what to do when an employee stops producing.

“Criticism and Discipline Skill for Managers” will be held at the Cheyenne Holiday Inn and is designed to offer managers a proven system for dealing with unproductive employees—a system that will either get an employee on track or get him or her out of your hair.

Participants will learn the hidden causes of poor performance—and how to start fixing the problem. They’ll learn how to gently prod a person to improve-and what to do if initial corrective actions don’t work. Finally, they’ll learn how to document the whole process so that your company is prepared if dismissal becomes necessary.

Enrichment Advisory Group To Meet
We are continuing to seek ideas and information from the general public on how we can improve and expand our program. To help us in this effort, we will be hosting our annual advisory group meeting October 16 from 9 - 11 am. We meet once a year to discuss any issue that can help us meet the needs of enrichment programming for the University and the community. All community members are invited to attend, whether you are a current participant, a potential participant, an instructor, or have any interest in what we offer in our class listings.

If you would like more information or to serve on our focus group, contact Jerimiah Rieman at 766-6801.

Through The Eyes Of A Student
I began working for the Community Service Education division of the Outreach School directly after I graduated in May of 2003. I serve as the assistant to Pam Brekken, the Marketing Coordinator of our department. My background is an interesting conglomeration of events that helped me secure my position in the department.

I obtained my bachelors degree in anthropology at the University of Wyoming in December of 2001. At that time, instead of trying to find a job in my field, I decided to be difficult; I enrolled in the eBusiness Master’s program here at the University of Wyoming. This one- year program gave me the opportunity to test myself in business and computer programming, and although I couldn’t write a Java program any better than a four-year-old child, I managed to graduate with the other 18 eBusiness majors.

The combination of my undergraduate work in anthropology and my graduate work in eBusiness has provided the necessary tools for the job. Anthropology gave me the practice in writing that helped hone the editing and content-writing skills that I apply everyday. EBusiness helped me learn how to work as a team, and to learn to delegate responsibility and follow through on a project.

The work I am doing for CSE is very diverse; I oversee the online non-credit classes, assist with Enrichment Programs marketing and underwriting, plan circuses, create ads with catchy (my girlfriend calls them cheesy) slogans, develop websites, conduct surveys and help out on bulk mailings. I get to be creative in my job, I’m building invaluable work experience in the process and I work with fun and interesting people. Who could ask for more?
