The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

Big Plans for Summer

So, now that summer is here and some of you have a bit more time, what are you going to do? Here’s my tentative list of summer activities:

Dinner hike with a llama (It includes a dinner of hotdogs and baked beans, and I get to meet a llama—and just for $20!)

Fort Laramie Excursion – includes a visit to Register Cliff and the Oregon Trail ruts (I got lost trying to find this by myself.)

Horticulture – Cooperative Extension’s Brett Moline will tell us what grows here!

Jubilee Grilling – Tuscan style grilled steak, beer can chicken a la Julia, pork tenderloin with a chili glaze, grilled veggies and pesto sauce, chili rubbed fish with roasted pepper vinegarette, and lime marinated shrimp brochettes with mango salsa – yum!

Take an online class – Introduction to PC Troubleshooting (not the most exciting subject but definitely needed)

Yes, all these classes are listed in our summer enrichment catalog and are on the web at outreach.uwyo.edu/enrichment.

Of course, summer is our busiest time on campus and around the state with coordination of over 40 groups before September 1. It is generally accepted within the collegiate industry that students that visit a campus (such as for a summer event) have a tendency to look at that college for future enrollment. Let’s keep those pre-college age groups coming to UW!

Other news includes a few new faces here at Community Service Education, a few new directions in sales and marketing, and definitely lots of creative programming! Please let me know if you have a program you would like to see offered here on campus or somewhere in the state.

Have a great summer.

Featured Conferences

Religious Groups   June 12-22,    July 9-11,    July 15-18
Once again the University of Wyoming will play host to numerous religious groups. We won’t see the large numbers like we witnessed last summer with the Episcopalian Youth Event (EYE) but we will have the opportunity to showcase our campus once again. June 18 -22 we will have approximately 750 United Methodist Clergy on campus who will be holding all of their meetings and most of their meals on campus. They are using all available dorm rooms, the Honors House and some local hotels. July 9-11 will bring the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Especially for Youth Conference. This conference is expecting about 325 participants, both boys and girls. All participants will stay on campus as well as dining on campus. The following week, July 15 -18 we will have the Lutheran conference. This conference expects to bring 150 participants to campus. They will be staying in the dorms and the Honors House and will be using catering for some of their meals. We look forward to hosting these groups and showing them our Wyoming hospitality and beautiful campus.

Multicultural Educators Symposium   June 23-25    “Widening the Circle of Success”
Join us in widening the circle of success at the Multicultural Educators Symposium in Casper, Wyoming, June 23-25, 2003. The conference promises to create learning opportunities in a wide range of topics, from parent involvement to culturally sensitive curriculum, from second language acquisition to classroom inclusion issues. In widening this circle of success, participants are invited to refresh, rejuvenate and take time for reflection. As educators and community leaders advancing competence in the arena of multicultural education, children in all educational settings will be the beneficiaries of your active participation at this conference. Partners from across the state have joined resources to provide the best symposium experience possible. The circle of success includes you as a partner. For more information contact Keith Guille at 766-2938.

Rocky Mountain Guitar Camp    August 10-16
The Rocky Mountain Guitar Camp, featuring LAGQ, takes place in the Snowy Range Mountains (30 minutes west of Laramie, WY), at the Randy-Watkins Recreational camp. The camp has a main lodge and separate cabins, surrounded by stunning views, groves of pine and aspen, fresh air and extraordinary recreational opportunities. The camp is at 8,000 feet above sea level, so the summers are cool and refreshing. In short, the perfect location for a retreat with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

Popularly known as LAGQ, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is recognized as one of the world’s premier instrumental ensembles. They have appeared with top orchestras and on prestigious music series from New York to Paris, Tokyo to San Francisco. In recent seasons, LAGQ has been heard coast-to-coast on popular radio programs such as Performance Today, St. Paul Sunday, and World Cafe. LAGQ’s performance of de Falla’s Fire Dance was nationally broadcast as part of the PBS special Evening at Pops. LAGQ has also been featured on CNN’s Show Biz Today, CBS’s Saturday Morning and A&E’s Breakfast with the Arts. LAGQ-Latin on Telarc is their most recent release, additional recordings are on the SONY Classical and Delos Labels. For more information contact Keith Guille at 766-2938 or visit the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet web page at www.lagq.com
