The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

NEWSLETTER - Fall 2001 - (Volume 4 Issue 3)

Old Business - New Directions

In June, we said good-bye to Judy Powell and welcomed Maggi Murdock as the acting Dean of The Outreach School, Associate VP of Academic Affairs. I'm sure the year will be full of new, creative directions for all of us, and we are looking forward to new programming while enhancing the business we are presently coordinating.
The campus seemed really busy this summer - maybe because we had over 9,000 visitors to the campus! And that doesn't include any of the recruitment groups/orientation, summer school students, or grant funded summer institutes. I'd like to particularly thank Michelle Black with Housing, Rosanne Latimer with UW Catering, Joyce Hill with Classroom Scheduling, Kim Zafft with the Student Union and the entire crew at Physical Plant for all the collaboration and support they gave us to get through this busy summer of renovations! We've continued to work with UW Admissions to make sure some of these visitors enroll here!

I'm continuing to work on such projects as the proposed conference center, the Albany County Tourism Board, and the Laramie Chamber Tourism Hospitality Committee. All of these projects can only enhance the number of tourists we bring to Laramie, the number of jobs supported by our local economy, and the continued enhancement and growth of the University of Wyoming.

Ever since I moved to Laramie, I have been so impressed with how local volunteers contribute so much to this community. With that same thought, we have created a volunteerism book, in conjunction with the Laramie Chamber of Commerce, that lists oodles of volunteerism opportunities, who to contact, and what type of help various organizations need. If you'd like to give back to Laramie in some way, please call me or Joy Badwound (766-5634) or visit our offices and browse through this publication. Help support our community with helping hands and hearts!

Technology updates at Community Service Education include a secure server for on-line registrations, on-line conference registration form and RFP for conference sponsors, and a listserv for all willing past enrollees of enrichment classes.

We have created new brochures promoting conferences, business workshops around the state, retreats, and on-line classes. Please let me know if you would like copies of any of this information (also available on our web sites) or Wyoming/UW brochures we use to contact prospective conference groups.

Finally, we have several new focuses this fall: new conferences (we're doing a lot with the Wyoming Department of Health - we were recently awarded a contract for 6+ conferences), a one-day southeast Wyoming trip for university and community members, on-line test prep classes (GRE, LSAT, etc.), and the volunteer workshop through Enrichment Classes.

As always, call me if you have an idea for training needs that are not currently being met through more traditional channels!

Have a great semester.

University of Wyoming
Office of Special Programs
Badlands to the Tetons Elderhostel Trip/September 7-18, 2001
Come with us on a "one-way round-trip journey" through the most interesting selection of important natural history sites in North America. We begin in the Badlands of South Dakota where life teemed millions of years ago, but is now a desolate landscape of barren hills & valleys. We then progress across the wide-open grasslands of northern Wyoming, before arriving in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem comprised largely of Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks. We will conclude our journey when we travel to Craters of the Moon National Monument. Throughout our travels we will come to understand the great diversity of life in the wide-open spaces of north central America. For more information on this program, contact Joy Badwound, at 766-5634

4th Annual Stroock Forum/September 20, 2001
Energy has roared back into the national and local headlines - the Bush-Cheney Energy plan, California blackouts, exploration of oil in ANWR, transmission of electricity from Wyoming and coal bed methane development all show energy plays many roles in our lives. The topics discussed in this year's Forum include an assessment of the current and future supply of energy resources in Wyoming, including oil and gas, coal and wind. The forum will examine the demand side of energy, including efforts at conservation, trends in government regulation and deregulation of energy resources and taxation of mineral resources. Special Programs will be coordinating this program for The College of Business. For more information on this program, contact Joy Badwound, at 766-5634.

Vision Screening/October 9-12, 2001
In cooperation with Developmental Pre-school, Department of Health, And WIND/uap, Special Programs will be coordinating the Wyoming Early Childhood Vision Screening Project in October. The training will develop uniform vision screening for the purpose of early detection of Wyoming children with serious vision problems by using uniform screening and referral processes that lead to timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention. For more information on this program, contact Barbara Barnes, at 766-5634.

For information about the Special Programs or to sign up, please call (307) 766-5634. We also welcome new ideas for programs!
Will you be looking for a summer job? Would you like to teach a course for an Elderhostel? We are always looking for teachers in history, the arts, geology or any subject that can showcase our state & university! Call Barb at 766-5634 if you would like more information.

This conference is geared towards all people who work with or have an interest in people, children and adults, with disabilities of all kinds. This includes learning disabilities, mental illness, traumatic and acquired brain injuries and developmental disabilities. If you have ever known someone with a disability, worked with someone with a disability, or hired someone with a disability, then this conference is one you would be sure to enjoy. Fall Tobacco Meeting - October 17-19
Everyday, an estimated 3,000 young people become regular smokers nationwide. One-third of those die of a tobacco-related disease. In Wyoming, the rate of high school students smoking is higher than the national average, and Wyoming ranks first in youth use of smokeless tobacco. The Offices of Conferences & Institutes and Special Programs are working in conjunction with the Wyoming Department of Health: Tobacco Prevention Project & Substance Abuse to help coordinate local training conferences and summits.
The Annual Youth Tobacco Prevention Summit was held in Guernsey, Wyoming at Camp Guernsey in early August. This program provided youth the opportunity to gain insightful knowledge about current tobacco issues, develop leadership skills, become powerful advocates in their community, discover tobacco prevention strategies, and meet new people. This year the program was pleased to have around 100 participants. For more information on the upcoming Tobacco Meeting, contact Keith Guille at 766-2938.

Extension Professional Improvement Conference (EPIC) - October 15-18
The annual Extension Professional Improvement Conference (EPIC) for UW Cooperative Extension Employees will be held October 15 - 18, 2001 in Cody, Wyoming at the Holiday Inn Convention Center. The theme for the 2001 conference is "Effective Path to Impacting Clientele". EPIC is designed to provide training for Cooperative Extension professionals to enhance their effectiveness as educators. This year’s conference will focus on team building, capacity building as an organization, needs assessment and program evaluation. The goal of the program is to demonstrate the use of the logic model in program planning and evaluation. The keynote speaker for the 2001 conference is John Miller, author of Personal Accountability and founder of QBQ, Inc., an organizational development firm, dedicated to "Helping People Ask the Question Behind the Question."
Over 80 Cooperative Extension professionals are expected at the conference including staff working in each of the 23 counties and Wind River Indian Reservation who will join UW Cooperative Extension specialists and administrators in Cody. For more information on EPIC, contact Wil Radosevich at 766-5637.

Wyoming Rendezvous Tour - October 18-21
The Wyoming Rendezvous tour was first organized three years ago to give UW faculty and staff an opportunity to visit Wyoming and gain an appreciation for the geography, cultures, and economy of our vast state. The tour also gives state residents and community leaders an opportunity to meet and become better acquainted with UW faculty/staff and to share personal and professional interests. This year the tour will visit the southwestern part of the state including Rock Springs, Afton, Pinedale and Rawlins. This tour is sponsored by the College of Agriculture. For more info on the tour or to sign up, please call Milton Ontiveroz, UW Public Relations at 766-6709.
