The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

NEWSLETTER - Spring 2001 - (Volume 4 Issue 1)

Happy New Year!

2001! It’s hard to believe we are starting the second year in the millennium. Our new year brings with it a new coordinator for Enrichment Classes, Karin Sybert. One of the first items on her agenda was to find a bigger location for our popular cooking classes, and she did! Join us for one of our popular culinary offerings this spring at the First Story Cooking School downtown. She also worked with Phil Roberts so that we can offer a “History of Wyoming” class in February. Watch for upcoming notices on this sure-to-be popular class. We will also be offering a sports officiating class. Watch the list serve for upcoming details.

We’ve been working with the Albany County Tourism Board to create a brochure highlighting the University of Wyoming and Laramie that will initially be used at 3 national trade shows for meeting spaces. We are printing extra copies, so if you are going to a regional or national conference yourself and would like copies to distribute, please give me a call. I’ll gladly send you over a supply.

Barbara Barnes is offering some new Elderhostel trips and several day excursions for the general public that we hope you’ll enjoy.

Special institutes for the spring include a Business Etiquette workshop, a new Better Business Series of workshops and we are repeating the volunteerism sign-up program with the chamber. See the enclosed article for more details.

If you ever say to yourself, “Why isn’t CSE offering a trip to, a conference on, an institute about, a class.....? “ call me! I’m always looking for new directions to take CSE and to spotlight the University of Wyoming. I hope to hear from you.

Have a great semester.

The Events Planning Office (EPO)
Connecting Campus & Community

Events Planning is moving right along. I’ve been working with area motels to develop a winning bid package for several conferences next summer. Our office hosted a summer conference recap meeting where housing, food service, and facilities situations were discussed. We also discussed what could be improved during the upcoming summer conference season. More meetings of this kind will be scheduled for later in the academic year.

The communications list serve is still going strong. We’ve welcomed several new members and are always looking to add more. If anyone is interested in finding out what is going on and off campus, call or e-mail me at 766-3362 or marciae@uwyo.edu and I’ll add you to the list of our little communiqué.

Two scheduling software companies were invited to campus in late October for demonstrations. After reviewing the software, the committee members will recommend the scheduling software for the University of Wyoming facilities. If you have any questions regarding this software, please contact committee chair, John Harrison, in the Facilities Management office.

The University of Wyoming will host the state Wyoming History Day competition in April. Plans are currently underway in scheduling rooms on campus and overnights off campus for the competitors. Victoria Murphy, executive director of Wyoming History Day at the American Heritage Center, advised that we could expect about 300 students, parents, and sponsors for this competition. For more information on Wyoming History Day, visit their web site at http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/ahc/historyday/default.htm.

Elderhostel Adventure Trips
Trails of Wyoming, Idaho and Utah
Journey with us as we examine the Oregon & Mormon trails from Scottsbluff National Monument in Nebraska, to Salt Lake City, Utah, where Brigham Young declared, “This is the place.” Our trip begins & ends in locations of relative safety for those intrepid pioneers. In between we will learn about the most arduous portion of the journey, where those hardy travelers of long ago faced the predations and deprivations of their trek across the wide open spaces of Wyoming.

Learn of the hardships faced from nature & the threats from the Native Americans who knew that they were going to lose some of their most treasured hunting grounds to these men and women or their descendants. Leave the myths of the movies behind. LIVE the history of the West! Join us on our trip along these two great trails!

Badlands to the Tetons
Come with us on a “one way round-trip journey” through the most interesting selection of important natural history sites in North America. We begin in the Badlands of South Dakota where life teemed millions of years ago but is now a desolate landscape of barren hills & valleys. We then progress across the wide open grasslands of northern Wyoming, before arriving in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem comprised largely of Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks.

We will conclude our journey when we travel to Craters of the Moon National Monument. Throughout our travels we will come to understand the great diversity of life in the wide open spaces of north central America.

For information about the Elderhostel programs or to sign up, please call (307) 766-5634. We also welcome new ideas for programs!
Will you be looking for a summer job? Would you like to teach a course for an Elderhostel? We are always looking for teachers in history, the arts, geology or any subject that can showcase our state & university! Call Barb at 6-5634 if you would like more information.

Volunteer Project - Random Acts of Kindness
“America was built on the spirit of volunteerism. Without the efforts of millions of volunteers who give their time to help others in their communities, our country would be a different place,” said Robert Goodwin, president and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation. “ ‘Saying I must do something will always solve more problems than simply saying ‘something must be done.’”

National Volunteer Week is April 22-28. Come join us to learn how you can perform random acts of kindness by volunteering! UW’s Community Service Education Division and the Laramie Chamber of Commerce invite you to drop in to (1) pick up information about volunteer activities and (2) register your interests on the Chamber database for volunteers.

This is a drop-in day, so choose a convenient time to stop by & learn more about volunteer opportunities. Volunteer agencies will have displays and handouts available. This event is FREE and open to all members of this community. Please join us!

April 24 9:00 am -5:00 pm
UW Outreach School Building, Beta House, Medicine Bow Room
We will also have an informational table in the UW Student Union on April 25 from 10:00 am -2:00 pm.
For further information, call Barbara Barnes at 6-5634.

Beta House - Public Meeting Rooms
The Outreach School Building, Beta House is under the supervision of Community Service Education and is booked/managed by Enrichment Classes. There are five public meeting rooms that are handicapped accessible and can be booked up to two months in advance for public usage. Call 766-6802 for more info.

Community Living Center - The Honors House
Do you need housing and meeting space for a small group during the summer months? The Honors House may be your answer. This past summer was the first summer of use by conference groups; everyone who used this space enjoyed the small, comfortable accommodations, located in the center of campus, that could be reserved exclusively for their group. The building has 13 double bedrooms on the second floor, a kitchen, dining room, and living room on the first floor, and a computer lab, rec room and washers and dryers in the basement. The bedrooms are wired for internet access, cable television is available both on the main and basement levels, and there is a live-in building manager to handle those pesky problems! This facility can offer you an alternative to less personal or more expensive facilities. Yes! We are already booking for the summer of 2001! Call Sheila at 6-5641 today if you would like more information or visit our Honors House web site at http://outreach.uwyo.edu/conferences/honorshouse

The Goal of Community Service Education
is to support the mission of The Outreach School by serving the people of Wyoming and others by anticipating and responding to education needs which can be served by conferences and community programming.
