NEWSLETTER - Fall 2000 - (Volume 3 Issue 3)

Fired-Up For Fall 2000
Welcome back to UW! We’ve gotten through all our summer groups and are gearing up for fall activities. There are several activities and points of interest I’d like to share with you:

Did you know that there were over 7,000 pre-college aged students here this summer? Here’s hoping at least 20% enroll at UW!

Events Planning is up and running. This gives you 2 different levels of conference service: basic and on-campus, and up to full-blown service including budget, preregistration, marketing, and located anywhere. Please keep in mind that if you are planning an event that is multi-day and multi-service, you need to check with the EPO at 6-3362 first!

Our community outreach project for this fall is promoting local volunteerism. We are collaborating with the Laramie Chamber of Commerce and offering two workshops to bring volunteers and projects together. See the workshops announcement inside.

Barbara Barnes has moved into Special Programs that includes Elderhostel programs as well as customized projects.

Keith Guille is our new conference coordinator. Some of you may remember Keith from his work at UW Housing several years ago.

Deon McCalla, our Honors House Building Manager, did a great job in getting us through our initial opening season jitters at this summer community living center for small conference groups.

If we offer any service that can help support you in your UW mission, please give me a call. Let’s work together to showcase the campus, the state, and all the UW personnel that make UW what it is today!

Have a great semester.

The Events Planning Office (EPO)
The Events Planning Office (EPO) that officially opened this past spring is a one-stop shop for campus-wide coordination and space reservations. Core support services include: facilities scheduling, contract negotiation, consolidated billing, master calendar listings, recruitment, and community business networking.

A campus community list serve has been started to keep members informed of what is happening on campus regarding conferences, construction projects, steam shut-down, etc. If you are interested in receiving this information, please call. The scheduling software committee is still working on the software program that will eventually link all campus space in a centralized database.

I’ve been working closely with members of the Laramie Chamber of Commerce and Albany County Tourism Board to organize a cohesive bid package to entice in-state and out-of-state organizations to bring large conventions/conferences to Laramie.

Please call me, Marcia Edwards, at 766-3362, if I can assist you in any way; if it is more convenient, e-mail me at marciae@uwyo.edu.

UW Special Programs - Elderhostels and Interhostels 2000
Barbara Barnes has been with the division in various positions for ten years. She is now focusing on the Department of Special Programs, that includes working with groups that require a high level of support. Additionally, part of her mission is to create groups that can use the Honors House Community Living Center during the summer months.

The Office of Special Programs is in the process of inventing itself. There are so many changes taking place on campus and that means opportunity to work with all the departments as they grow and create new programming for the campus and state.

Special Programs has the ability to customize itself to any logistical coordination effort you may have. While we have conference coordinators to do the traditional, we have Special Programs to do the decidedly nontraditional.

We are here to design retreats, on and off campus, to do motor coach trips, to play host to your group on campus, to partner with other universities in program exchanges, and showcase the university, community and state.

In the summer we have the Honors House as a community living center. We are planning to host a teacher institute in our center for next summer. How about a week with fabulous Wyoming chefs? Or a luxurious spa week? Or a retreat for your office or church? Maybe a family reunion? The possibilities are endless.

Community Service Education has the office of Special Programs so that you have a resource available to meet the needs of your creative efforts. We would welcome a visit from you and hear any ideas you might have. For further information call Barbara Barnes, 766-5634.

Featured Fall 2000 Conferences:
Watchable Wildlife
This conference being held in Casper will bring together representatives from government agencies, nonprofit organizations and the business community throughout the U.S. and several foreign countries. Pre-conference activities include tour packages into the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, “Wildlife Watch” Workshop, North Platte River fly fishing and canoeing expeditions, Interpretive Planning Workshop and the Wyoming Hunting and Fishing Heritage EXPO. The conference will feature nationally known presenters, panels, workshops and sessions on wildlife education programs, wildlife festivals, watchable wildlife in tourism initiatives, marketing and more. Wyoming Youth Entrepreneurship Summit
The Wyoming Youth Entrepreneurship Conference in Casper, WY is designed to help youth entrepreneurs and the adults who work with these youth while developing a community that encourages and supports youth entrepreneur efforts. One of Wyoming’s major youth issues is the number of youth who leave the state after graduation for jobs in other states. Teaching basic business knowledge and skills will result in young adults who better understand how to manage their lives. The objective of the 4-H entrepreneur project is to encourage Wyoming youth to stay in Wyoming and develop small businesses and the formation of a Wyoming Entrepreneurial Association or Network. For additional program or Network information contact: Dr. Fred Schlutt, Extension 4-H Specialist, at 766-3430

History Web Class (for credit)
For many traditional chroniclers of the Old West, the standard image was that of a last bastion of Anglo America, a frontier where “whiteness” mattered. A closer look at the ranches, mining and lumber camps, or cities of the historical West, however, reveals a tremendously diverse social and cultural landscape. In this course, you will help our students better understand and appreciate the multicultural West in which they live. The material will provide a chronological and thematic overview of immigration and ethnic history in the American West from the 19th century to the present day. The class will include weekly lesson plans, a threaded discussion, bibliography and webliography, plus the Suggested lessons for K-12 students.

Adult Learning & Technology Symposium & 50th Anniversary Celebration
Join us in Jackson Hole, WY as we celebrate 50 years of academic study devoted to adult education and to instructional technology and share in a discussion of contemporary issues impacting the futures of both disciplines. As we enter a new millennium, it seems appropriate to reflect upon the accomplishments as well as the shortcomings of both disciplines and to creatively imagine their futures. The purpose of this symposium is to provide a forum for such discussion. Theme sessions are designed for discussion, allowing presenters fifteen minutes each to briefly highlight their views. No concurrent sessions are planned; participants will be able to attend each theme session. A final “wrap-up” session concludes the Symposium on Saturday afternoon, at which time implications for the future of graduate study in adult education and in instructional technology will be discussed.
