What's Inside

Pioneering Programs on the Horizon

We have a multitude of exciting programs and initiatives for this spring, many of which you can find in this newsletter.  You may notice we are planning trips, coordinating customized training, continuing our business certificate program that has drawn a lot of interest, and are offering training throughout the state.  We are focusing on excellence in training and coordination, supporting leadership initiatives, and adding depth to some of our previous programs by expanding our coverage and increasing our audience with the use of various distance delivery programming.  We have developed guidelines for certificate programs that has helped us maintain quality and integrity in new ventures, and we are currently working on supporting best practices with all noncredit instructors.
Another exciting project that Arietta Weidmann, former Associate Dean of the Outreach School and now Part-time Coordinator for Special Projects, and the CSE staff are working on is a noncredit articulation gathering of community colleges, the University of Wyoming and other organizations around the state involved in training.  This gathering will take place in April it a central Wyoming location.  Our projected outcome is to discover what noncredit training is being offered, by whom, and what is needed to support the future of Wyoming’s learning communities.
We continue to research trends such as new conference directions (green meetings, streamlined services, and specialized services such as pre- and post-trips), changing demographics, economic concerns, and issues of concern to our citizens today and tomorrow.  You can view an online publication addressing conference environmental scanning, by visiting http://acced-i.colostate.edu/imis_web/
staticcontent/3/esp/esp_homepage2.htm.  There is some great information on conference and general training trends.
If you would like more information on any of these new program directions, call me at 766-5641; let’s talk about your training needs.  Have a great semester!

Galapagos Islands  -   Summer 08
Our newest trip offers adventure seekers an opportunity to experience the Galapagos Islands.  Travel with fellow Wyomingites and partake in some of the scientific research being conducted on the Galapagos Islands, while immersing yourself in a truly marine experience.
The Galapagos Archipelago consists of 4,897 square miles. The group consists of 13 main islands, 6 smaller islands, and 107 rocks and islets. The islands are located at the Galapagos hotspot, a place where the earth's crust is being melted from below by a mantle plume, creating volcanoes. The oldest island is thought to have formed between 5 and 10 million years ago. The youngest islands, Isabela and Fernandina, are still being formed, with the most recent volcanic eruption in 2007.
Form more information about this trip, including dates and prices, please contact Christopher Harnden at 307-766-5637 or email cse_coordinator3@uwyo.edu.

UW Conferences and Institutes is always looking at needs and trends in the community to see what role we can play in developing programs to fit current needs. It seems that now is the appropriate time to offer a Hospitality Certificate Program to new and existing properties. The goal is to help improve the service staff offer to customers, in hopes of creating a positive experience in Laramie. We will offer several sessions that can be taken separately or as an entire program; Etiquette & Ethics, Multiple Project Handling, Group Dynamics and Customer Service.

These sessions will be taught by professionals with the state and within the industry. Watch for more details on the time, place and how to register. For more information please contact Denise Marquiss at 307-766-3362.

Community Enrichment Programs

Community Enrichment Programs provides lifelong learning opportunities to community members of all ages and at all stages of life, focusing on training, workshops, and classes that truly meet the needs of the community.  Our spring offerings include a wealth of classes focusing on a major trend that affects each and every member of our community: globalization.  As technology increasingly allows us to regularly communicate and do business with people around the world, and as global trade continues to rise, there is no doubt that globalization impacts us each day, and its affects will become more apparent with each passing year.
With such changing trends, understanding a bit of the language and the culture of other nations becomes necessary.  Our spring Language and Culture series allows you to explore traditions, customs, communication patterns, scenery, landmarks, food, and language of places around the globe.  The interactive, laid-back atmosphere of these classes allows you to try your hand at a new language or learn to understand a new culture without the pressure of grades!  Our instructors are top-notch, and many are native speakers of the language they are teaching or have grown up in the culture they will share in class.              We are also offering three classes over compressed video available state-wide: Spanish for Law Enforcement, Saving Your School, and Survivor’s Journal. In addition to these video-format courses, we offer literally thousands of online classes that can be accessed anywhere – not only state-wide, but anywhere in the world!
Community Enrichment Programs is a venue through which community members come together to learn and dialogue on major issues, which affect the communities and the world we live in.  Spring programming that invites such dialogue include: Women of the Middle East, The Pathways of Islam: Moderation or Terror as well as Green Building and Remodeling, and Writing for Change.  We are offering youth “empowerment” classes such as, Hip-Hop School, and Celebrating Girls!  In addition, our Business and Web Design Certificates Programs provide the tools you need to become a leader in the workplace.
The UW Web Design Certificate Program is a great option for beginning web designers and small business owners who want to know the ins and outs of designing and maintaining a website.  Four courses on Basic Web Design are available beginning in January toward the UW Web Design Certificate (which requires a total of 12 courses to complete), including: Website Monetization, Marketing a Site on a Shoestring, SEO and Accessibility, and Site Security for Small Business.  More advanced options are also available through two new Intensive Website courses: Database Shopping Cart Intensive Course and Advanced Website Intensive Course.  For all Web Design classes, no website experience is necessary, only basic computer skills required.
For more information about any of the classes mentioned above, visit
http://outreach.uwyo.edu/enrichment or call Heather Landers at 307-766-6801.

Prepare for Your Family's Future
Many of us are entering a time when we should prepare ourselves or our loved ones for the final journey.  It’s not one we look forward to but we need to plan as much for this stage of our lives as we do others.  Survivors Journal, a class offered by nationally recognized facilitator Denise Wheeler, can assist you in making the necessary plans. The opportunity to participate in this class is available on compressed video at over 10 sites in Wyoming on April 11,  and in Laramie on April 12.  The class provides the steps to design a portfolio of information and instructions to help your family make essential decisions after your death or during recovery from a serious illness or injury. Denise will guide you through the creation of your own Survivor’s Journal so that you can adequately prepare yourself and your loved ones through this process.
For more information or to register, please contact Heather Landers at 307-766-6802.

Online Home Room

In accordance with the University of Wyoming’s Academic Plan, Community Service Education promotes easier access to higher education through online offerings.  Its noncredit online courses make delivery of material as easy as logging onto a Web site.  Easier access also means increasing inclusiveness.  Noncredit online classes are available to anyone with internet access regardless of admission status.  With easier access, students can prepare for the variety of demands in the classroom or on the job.
For the fifth year in a row, Community Service Education experienced continued growth in online noncredit classes and is poised to sustain this trend into 2008.  Through continued agreements with Ed2Go.com and Gatlin Education and new partnerships with JER Online and Donald Trump’s Trump University, CSE hopes to increase available online noncredit classes and offer learning opportunities to everyone.
Trump University is a global leader in online training, particularly in the fields of management, real estate, and entrepreneurship.  Students can take courses with the direction of world-class instructors or as part of a self-directed tutorial.
“I’m excited to bring Trump University classes to students at UW,” said Sheila Couture, CSE Director.  “After completing a course myself, I am confident students across Wyoming will benefit from the level of instruction being offered.”
UW now offers more than 5,000 noncredit online courses across a wide field of subjects.  Virtually every field of study can be learned online through CSE including Computers, Accounting, Management, Veterinary Science, Oil Refinery Operations, and Fire Department Safety Training, just to name a few.  By partnering with JER Online UW has increased the depth of its already wide range of classes.
“I met with JER President Dr. John Reid at the national LERN convention in Orlando and was convinced of his commitment to providing detailed online courses in a user friendly format,” says John Scozzafava, online coordinator for CSE.
Students can enroll in online courses at anytime.  Courses range from a single class to six month certificate programs. To view a complete list of online classes visit http://outreach.uwyo.edu/enrichment/onlinecourses. Online registration is available or contact John at jscozzaf@uwyo.edu or (307) 766-5634.
