November Tips for Planning Your Events |
||
I read an interesting article recently in Meetings and Conventions magazine and thought it might work for our town. The title was "The Advantages of Taking over a Small Destination." Often as we look at bringing large conferences or meetings to Laramie our standard response is “we don’t have the space”. The University has limited space available for outside groups so I think we need to change our thinking to: “we can accommodate large groups... it's just not under one roof.” It’s historic downtown Laramie. Although none of our hotels have over 84 rooms, together we have over 1,400 rooms including our two Bed & Breakfasts. What do we have to offer? You’re away from the city lights, crowds, and traffic. We have friendly people, unique shopping, outstanding museums, nature, stars, and wide open spaces. You can easily walk all around Laramie and it’s safe. We offer a refreshing environment for meetings. Have you thought about holding a plenary session in a church and spreading your breakouts at the Depot, a museum, the library or Grand Bazaar 2? We have great restaurants that offer a variety of foods. Wouldn't it be nice to stretch your legs between sessions and take a quick walk around the block or stroll downtown for lunch before you’re back in the chair for another session? Local merchants would love having groups here and would appreciate the additional business. Suggest participants plan a little pre or post conference time and take in the Snowy Range Mountains for a hike in the summer or an afternoon of skiing in the winter. There’s nothing like the fresh mountain air to open the minds. If you need help planning your next conference or meeting, call Denise in the Event Planning Office at 766-3362. I can help you with events on campus, off campus; in or outside of Laramie.
