Understanding Across Generations:

In today’s ever changing workplace, we are working with colleagues from several different generations. Those of us baby boomers to those who could be our children or grandchildren. That makes the workplace a challenge because each generation has different skills, expectations and work styles. It’s helpful to understand some of those characteristics in the workplace and it helps to know your audience when planning an event.

Baby Boomers: born 1946-1964

  • Idealistic
  • Comfortable with technology
  • Me Generation
  • Question authority
  • Competitive
  • Optimistic

Generation X: born 1965-1976

  • Independence, resilience and adaptability.
  • Expects immediate and ongoing feedback, and is equally comfortable giving feedback to others.
  • Works well in multicultural settings
  • Desire some fun in the workplace
  • Pragmatic approach to getting things done.
  • Redefines
  • No career ladder; theirs is a career lattice. They can move laterally, stop and start, their career in more fluid
  • Dislike authority and rigid work requirements.
  • Need feedback on their performance
  • Need creativity and initiative encouraged
  • Independent
  • Hands –off style
     Generation Y: The Millennials
    born 1977-1998
  • Racially and ethnically diverse
  • Extremely independent
  • Empowered by overindulgent parents
  • Display a great deal of self confidence to the point of appearing cocky
  • Technically iterate like no one else
  • Team-Oriented
  • Work well in groups, preferring this to individual endeavors
  • Good multitaskers
  • Acknowledge and respect position and titles
  • Respond well to personal attention
  • Appreciate structure and stability
  • High performance and high maintenance
  • Environment where creativity and independent thinking are looked upon as a positive
  • Interested in making their jobs accommodate their family and personal lives
  • Want jobs with flexibility, telecommuting options and the ability to go part time or leave the workforce temporarily when children are in the picture.
  • Higher value on self fulfillment.
  • Don’t expect to stay in a job or career for too long
